In the south-eastern tip of India, on the Bay of Bengal, located
between mainland India and the long Burma (Myanmar) coast lies a group
of coral islands. The North Andaman, The Middle Andaman, The South
Andaman and the Little Andaman along with an assortment of smaller
islands. Collectively called the Andaman Islands, their evergreen forest covered hills and unique ecology are a feast for the eyes. In close proximity lies another group of enticing islands. The Nicobar Islands, comprising Great Nicobar, Car Nicobar, Nancowry, Katchal and Chowra. In all the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is a collection of 293 richly forested Tropical islands, only 39 of which are inhabited.
At Port Blair, situated in South Andaman Island, is housed the Headquarter of this Union Territory. Port Blair, is a short flight from Kolkata by air (it is also connected by flights from Delhi and Chennai). Travel is restricted here. But any disappointment, or heartburn quickly disappears at the sight of undulating beaches and coral beds of the islands open to the tourist.
In Port Blair, the Cellular Jail the and Anthropological Museum are a must visit places. A motor launch excursion to certain other sites are highly recommended like to the islands of Wandoor and Jolly Buoy. Also not to be missed is the bird sanctuary at Chiriyatapoo.

Blair, the capital of the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar
Islands, is an ideal base for touring the archipelago of 321 islands.
Originally used as a penal colony by the British and more popularly
known as Kala Pani or black waters, evidence of the brutal punishment
meted out to the Indian patriots who were deported there to serve life
sentences can be seen at the Cellular Jail, now declared a national
monument.
