Mukteshwar Temple in Bhubaneshwar, India Orissa's capital city, Bhubaneswar, is a interesting mixture of ancient temples and modern buildings. The city, at one time boasted of around 10,000 temples, of which a few hundreds still survive dominated by the ancient Lingaraj temple, Mukteswar temple and the Raja-Rani temple. It is best known as the, 'city of temples'.

Mukteswar Temple

Mukteswar Temple often called the 'gem of Orissa architecture', is one of the most beautiful expressions of Kalinga school of architecture. The 10th century temple has some of the most ornate carvings and redentions of stories from the Panchatantra.

The arched gateway shows an excellent combination of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain features which is common in Orissan temple craft.


Brahmeswar Temple

The 9th century Brahmeswar temple stands in a courtyard flanked by four small structures.


Raja Rani Temple

Dating back to the 11th century, the Raja-Rani Temple is an elegant example of temple art and architecture.

The sensuous beauty of the female form and the filigree sweetness of flowers and fruits are enhanced by the artist's labourious skill. Lack of a deity and celebration of the female form are some intresting features of the temple.
