Fatehpur Sikri , a city built by Emperor Akbar in honour of a saint
named Sheikh Salim Chishti, is an architectural masterpiece. Akbar had
no heir to his throne, so he visited numerous holy men to enlist their
prayers. When he visited Sheikh Salim Chishti, who was living at the
village Sikri, the saint foretold the emperor that he would be blessed
with a son. Soon a son was born to the emperor and named Salim after the
saint. Akbar was so impressed by the sequence of events that he resolved
to build an entirely new capital at Sikri in honour of the saint. The
walled city of Fatehpur Sikri, built with nine gates, is deserted today
but its monuments still stand, evidence of an age of grandeur. The walled city of Fatehpur Sikri had nine gates. Beginning on the eastern side from north to south the gateways are Delhi Darwaza, Suraj Darwaza, Chandar Darwaza, and Gwalior Darwaza,Chor Khirki and Ajmeri Darwaza. From Agra Gate one passes the sandstone Tansens Baradari on the right where the imperial band greeted the Emperors appearances in Diwan-i-Am.
