Idukki, with altitudes up to 2500 ft above sea level, is a district
whose name is derived from the Malayalam word 'Idukku' which means a
narrow gauge. Flanked by the Western Ghats in the East, the district has
many narrow steep-sided valleys, giving credence to the name. About 1500
sq km of its area is reserved forest, harbouring tigers, bison, monkeys
and many other varieties of wildlife.The geographical characteristics and climate of the Idukki district are unique in the country. Within the district are 14 peaks which exceed a height of 2000 meters above mean sea level. Numerous streams, valleys and hills combine to make Idukki an ideal year-round holiday destination. The district is bounded by Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts on the south, Trichur and Coimbatore districts on the north, Madurai, Ramanad and Thirunelveli districts on the east and Ernakulam district on the west.
