Mathura, popularly known as Brij Bhoomi, is a major pilgrimage place
for Hindus. Lord Krishna, the incarnation of Vishnu is believed to have
been born in Mathura and the area is closely linked with many episodes
in his early life. Nearby is Vrindaban where Krishna sported with his
gopis (milkmaids). Although Mathura has been an important centre for
arts, the region's significance is largely incorporeal. |

Gokul |

Gokul is 16 km from south of Mathura, where Lord Krishna was secretly raised. Thousands of pilgrims flock here during Lord Krishna's birthday festival. |

Goverdhan is 25 km west of Mathura, on the road to Deeg. Lord Krishna is said to have protected the inhabitants of Goverdhan from Indra's warth (rain) by holding the hilltop on top of his finger for seven days and night. Go Top |
