Mumbai Tours, India

Location :
Prime Attraction : Gateway Of India - Juhu Beach - Marine Drive - Elephanta Caves

Gateway Of India, Mumbai, India Mumbai, till recently called Bombay, is the capital city of Maharashtra. The only British monarch to visit India, King George V, first set foot on Indian soil at Mumbai in 1911. To commemorate his visit, the Gateway to India, Mumbai's best known landmark, was completed in 1927. An alluring mixture of races and cultures, the pulsating city is on the move. Its famed Bollywood churns out more movies than any in the world.

With most premier multinational and national corporate houses headquartered here, it remains the bastion of free enterprise. It is a major manufacturing and trading centre for everything from garments, pharmaceuticals and toiletries to cars and cosmetics. Its international airport and seaport are the busiest in the country and handle virtually 50% of all India's foreign trade. The coastline of Maharashtra, stretching 720 km, provides for exciting water sports, sun bathing on golden sands, exploring grand fortresses, temples and churches, and discovering tiny, remote villages.

The vast Arabian sea expanding beyond the coastlines has a mesmeric charm to offer and the main beaches in the state are Chaul, Murudi-Janjira, Kashid, Ganpatipule, Manori island, Mandwa-Kihim and Dahanu-Bordi, etc. Mumbai is an exhilarating city fuelled by entrepreneurial energy, determination and dreams. Its skyscraper-filled skyline and busy work culture could belong to any metropolis in the world.

Prime Attractions
Gateway Of India

The ceremonial arch was built in 1927 to commemorate the visit of King George V and queen Mary for the Delhi Durbar in 1911. Constructed in honey-coloured basalt, the gateway was designed by George Witte, inspired by 16th century Gujarat style.

The changing light of the rising and setting sun gives varied hues of gold, russet and pink to the imposing arch. Historically, the gateway holds greater significance as the last of the British troops leaving independent India by sea, marched through it's portals.

Juhu Beach

Situated 30 km from the city, this crowded beach with residential apartments and bungalows seems to contain the entire population of the area. The central part has food stalls, similar to Chowpatty. And a lot more, in terms of fun-rides for children.

Beyond the city are the relatively unspoilt, secluded beaches at Versova, Madh Island, Marve, Manori and Gorai. The beaches at Madh and Marve have their dangerous spots which are marked by signboards. The spots further ahead, Gorai and Manori, two fishing villages, are accessible by ferry.

Marine Drive

Marine DriveOne of the most popular attractions of Mumbai - Marine Drive shares the shoreline of the Arabian Sea, stretching from the Nariman Point till the Malabar Hills. It was built in 1920.

One can enjoy a simple solitary walk along the beach or converse with friends, there will always be someone to entertain you with their monkey's tricks and dance or you can take advantage of horse riding or traveling on camel back.

The night lights in the streets are arranged in such fashion that they resemble a women's jewellery, dubbing it as the Queen's Necklace.

Elephanta Caves

The Elephanta island lies 9 km north-east to Apollo Bunder or Gateway of India. The island which was known as Gharapuri earlier is the glorious abode of Lord Shiva. This island was renamed, Elephanta by the Portuguese who landed here, after they saw the majesticaly carved elephant on this island.

Spread over an area of 500 sq mt is the cave temple of Elephanta. A flight of 100 steps takes you to the top of the hill where it is set. The temple houses large pillars that seem to hold the ceiling which is made of cross beams. The picturesque presentation of the 9 marvelous sculptured panels, set on the walls are awe-inspiring. The most famous of the panels is the Trimurti, or triple-headed Shiva, where the God is depicted as the destroyer, the preserver and the creator.

There are figures of Lord Shiva dancing the Tandava, the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, Ravana shaking Kailas, a scary carving of Shiva killing the demon Andhaka, and one in which Shiva appears as Ardhnari, uniting both sexes in one body.

In the month of February is the Elephanta Festival which is celebrated with great enthusiasm and artists perform outside the caves in the open, filling the atmosphere with dance, music and colour.
