The city of Puri is best visited during the annual rites of the Rath Yatra or Car Festival which is held in the month of June-July, when images of Lord Jagannath, his sister Subhadra and brother Balbhadra are transported through the Grand Road (Bada Danda) of Puri in traditionally decorated massive chariots dragged by thousands of devotees. Puri's other great attraction is its long sandy beaches.

The Konark Temple was originally nearer to the coast and was known as the "Black Pagoda" by sailors. The Sun Temple, conceived as a chariot, hauling the sun God across the heavens by the mighty of seven splendidly horses, standing aloft on 24 chariot wheels.

Adjacent to the main temple lies the Natamandira (dance hall), intricately carved with musicians and dancers in various poses.

Konark Beach

The Konark Beach or Chandrabhaga beach is approx. 3km from the Sun temple. The beach is famous for it's long strech of clean sands and cool blue sea making rapids in rolling waves, the beach has it's own lovely serenity.

This part of the beach is much quieter than the Puri beach and you can enjoy the beautiful sunset here. The immense backdrop of the Sun temple looks magnificent when illuminated in the evening.
