Rameshwaram Temple in India Rameshwaram, a major Hindu pilgrimage centre, is a small island in the Gulf of Mannar. Located off the eastern coast in Tamil Nadu, the town offers beautiful beaches. It is one of the major marine food centres in the South with much of its fish and prawn catch being exported.

The temples here the showcase the finest of Dravidian architecture. The massive sculptured pillars and magnificent corridors of the temples, among the longest in India (197 meters), are known for their beauty.

Mythology says that Lord Rama performed some rituals to thank lord Shiva for his victory over the demon king Ravana. This makes the place coveted by both Vaishnavites and Saivites.

Ramanathapuram

This ancient town is the district headquarters. The Ramalinga Vilasam Palace, with it's good paintings and the tomb of Thayumana Swamigal -- a philosopher saint are situated here.

The oil portraits of the rajas of the past centuries and the articulately designed ceilings and walls embellished with 18 th century murals, the subjects of which vary from business. Meetings with the English to battles with the Marathas, make this place more interesting.


Ramanathaswamy Temple

Udayagiri fort, built by king Marthanda Varma in 1729-1758 A.D, has a foundry for casting guns. The king's trusted European general De Lennoy's tomb is located within this fort.
