Alleppey also known as Alappuzha, one of the best known ports along the coast of Malabar, referred to as the' Venice of the east', is built on the banks of a network of canals. It is a famous trade centre of ancient times. The beach here is not as big as the others. However, north of Alleppey, the Arthunkal beach is worthy of development as an international holiday resort. Watching rural life at close quarters, the many activities like; toddy tapping, fishing for small fry, coir-making, prawn farming, and scores of other sights by a boat trip in a country craft up and down the narrow canals in the coastal region is gaining in popularity among the foreign tourists and the north Indian visitors alike.

Prime Attractions :

One of the oldest churches in Kerala, the St. Mary''s Church is believed to be one of the seven established by St. Thomas. The annual feast at this church falls on the 3rd Sunday of October every year.

There are two Edakkal Caves, natural rock cut-out formations, formed by a large split in a huge rock roofed over by other large rocks, all fixed in position through natural processes. These caves have been made famous world-wide for their ancient carvings and pictorial wall inscriptions of human and animal figures with peculiar head-dresses and swastik forms and symbols. Archaeologists say the place was one of the earliest centres of human habitation.

These caves are seen in the Ambukuthy mountains, located in between Sulthan Battery and Ambalavayal. The caves contain several paintings and pictorial writings of the new stone age civilization which speak volumes of the bygone life and civilization.

This beautiful old palace of the Travancore rajas is a stunning piece of architectural excellence. At night when the palace grounds are lit by garden lamps, the gabled, pagoda style red brick structure comes alive, bringing to mind the royal majesty of the kings who once inhabited it's mighty interiors. Inside one can see large crystal chandeliers and exquisite pieces of royal furniture.

It''s called the rice bowl of Kerala because of her wealth of paddy crops, is at the very heart of the backwaters. The scenic countryside of Kuttanad with its shimmering waterways also has a rich crop of Banana, Cassava and Yam. This is perhaps the only region in the world where farming is done 1.5 to 2 mtr below sea level. Inland waterways which flow above land lever are an amazing feature of this region.

Located in the heart of the "spice coast", Marari Beach is just an hour from Cochin and even less to Alleppey(also Known as Alpuzzha). Unexplored beaches of Marari offer an excellent oppurtunity to relax and enjoy the sun and the waves. It is a place you will usually find filled with small fishing boats, as life here has not changed much. Men daily go out to sea to earn a living bringing in the daily catch. You can interact with the locals and go fishing with them, enjoying the local charm and traditional keralan hospitality at its best.
